December is upon us, as is the end of 2011. So too is the end of kork. After three years of serving as a bastion of culture in Poughkeepsie, perched not so high above Deborah Bailey Browne, CPA's photocopier, kork is calling it quits at the end of December.

Some 31 artists are helping to countdown the final days of kork with an artwork for everyday in December.

The Advent project we held in December, 2009 was so fulfilling and so much fun, we thought we'd do it again...just a little differently.

This time, kork instigator (Chris Albert) is crowd sourcing the resolution, reworking, or even total annihilation of his painting THA from 2001. Participating artists are pitching in, "re-invisioning", "re-working", or simply obliterating this painting by man handling bad 4"x6" photographs of the painting.

Once done, these photographs will be mailed by the artists to the accounting office in Poughkeepsie and then deployed onto the kork board. Subscribers to the Advent mailing list (see the form to the right) will receive an email featuring an image of the day's postcard artwork.

It's a bit of sharing, a bit of giving and a bit of caring....all just in time for this holiday season.

This work is a series of ten images, the results of a digital game the artist invented with the ten basic numbers. Instead of the typical numeric values, each number was provided with values of size and colour. The play took place with kaleidoscopic methods and it ended up in a visual form.
This game did not deal with incomes and outcomes but it did un-link the ten numbers from socio-economic connotations, subtracting each one of them from all adult meaning and releasing them in a playful and childlike way, to new and perhaps more liberating possibilities.

Jörg Bivendørf was born on the island Hopen. At age 79, fed up with the secrecy of his possible parents among the four resident researchers at the weather station, he stole a wagon and set sail for Biarritz. Seventeen months later, barely dry, he drifted up on the shores of Barentsburg and took a cab to Longyearbyen. He found Svalbard an ideal place for fashion inspiration because of the pessimistic temperature readings. For Jörg, more layers equals more Fashion.
Jörg was named for his Swedish grandmother Jörgina VIII, who is credited with coining the term "you wanna make a muffin? When he was born, realizing he was completely naked, Jörg began fashioning garments out of necessity. His first design was the totally organic and original Seal Chaps ™.

Nature has no alphabet or written word.
Yet to writers and poets, words exist within the topography
and are there to be found if one searches.
These "lost" words hide beneath the brambles, within the moss,
or float in the air as sounds or songs.
The flora and fauna contribute their lexis throughout the landscape,
with bleached bones, old stones or other refuse,
waiting for an interpreter to turn their words to language.

Vacation Photos:

There used to be this joke about carousels of vacation slides and dry evenings where people were forced to watch them. 150 photos of the Grand Canyon, or the same 18 shots of Disneyland, or found postcards of roadside tourist traps. There have been some attempts to recreate these images through curation and cultural capital as a legitimate and once lost history of the genre. You can see it in websites like Square America, exhibitions like The History of the American Snapshot, or in projects like Martin Parr's collections of boring postcards.
I am interested in how to re-make the spirit of these vernacular forms; not through theory, but by a kind of performance working through of historical memes. In this case, the photos here are a document of my vacation to upstate New York: hotel rooms, highways, museums, and roadside stops. In this capacity, they're at once an attempt to make vacation photos again--to reclaim the boring aspects it away from the aesthetes. I do this with a point and shoot camera, with developing the photos at a 24 hour CVS on the highway across the interstate from a Barnes and Noble and a Stop and Shop.
There is some newness to this procedure, an ease that can only be made via digital cameras, the editing done now on lap tops, the storage being done on USB sticks, but the core of this is to force people to look at my vacation photos, not as a move of aesthetic difference.
Though there is an aesthetic difference here, there is a history of art photography here that cannot be ignored, that there is an element of Shore selling postcards in Texas here; an element of making aesthetic that which was first intended to be documentary. The ambiguity of art practice and documentary practice in photography is something that continues to fascinate me, and this work is intended to process those issues.

kork presents Advent: December 1, 2009-Jan 1, 2010 : Something to look forward to in December.

In this time of year when art galleries throughout are mounting group exhibits with the intent of enticing buyers with an array of small, gift worthy artworks, we at kork, Poughkeepsie's most sincerely avant project space for art, are bringing together our own cadre of artists - and we're not trying to sell you anything.

Rather, we'll be sharing a little time with the art loving public; a month, to be exact.

Advent brings together 31 artists to count down the final month of 2009. In the manner of that desktop stalwart, the page-a-day calender, each day of December will be represented by an artwork accompanied by a phrase, quote or definition (inspirational or not) of the artist's choosing or contrivance.

The project will exist in physical form at the kork Gallery/Project Space in Poughkeepsie, NY and as a virtual calendar in the form of a daily email featuring a different artist's contribution for the entire month of December.

Advent is our gift to the art loving public in this season of getting.

It's the pure pleasure of passing time, one artist, one day at a time.

The public is invited to sign up to receive the month of daily emails, sign up using the form in the sidebar.

We will not sell your email address or any other such pernicious thing. We will not spam you or send you any emails other than the advent emails and your address will be deleted from our list at the conclusion of the project unless you opt in to receive future kork emails.

We will not resend advent emails after their corresponding day, so if you'd like to receive a the full set, sign up on or before Nov. 30, 2009.

Mark's statement:

Copy machines and cork boards!
They go together like cabbage rolls and coffee!
My plan is to create a participatory project with daily interventions involving the copier and the board.
Each business day, a new copy will appear in the center of the board, sort of like a daily announcement. This project will develop very organically and the premise may even alter as contingencies warrant.
Ultimately, I hope this will be something everyone in the office enjoys, that it engenders either a smile to deep philosophical contemplation. I welcome any comments, suggestions, observations, and thoughts. I can be reached at markcreegan[at]yahoo[dot]com.

This is to inform you that I am submitting my 5 day notice. I promise to clean my work area (i.e. corkboard) before I leave. I would stay longer to help train my replacement, but since he or she is just another artist, he or she will be doing whatever he or she wants to do (commie hippie!) I am sure nothing he or she does will be half as brilliant ( they will probably just send in requests to photocopy people's bums- how original!). By the way, if someone comes around saying he is a "consultant", thats NOT an artist!

Don't expect to much work from me during my last week, I will probably just work from home and email work that someone else (Gina) will do. My lunch breaks are going to be like 4 hours! I may even get a pedicure!

I was hoping to move on to better things but the economy nixed my plans to do art intervention work on the stock board at the NYSE. I guess the clipboard at Dairy Queen will have to do ( I am sure to do wonderful things with sprinkles!)

I am sure someone will want me to do an exit interview. Feel free to email me. I will answer as well as I can, sobriety contingent.

When I worked in various offices I would stare at the shelf of office supplies above the copier, or the tacked up menus, or the sticker with the phone number for the repairman and daydream about making art. This piece is about that memory. In order to combine the worlds of the office and the studio in one moment I have used supplies from both worlds - the art studio (paint can lids, paint) and the office (pens, paper clips and pushpins). The title “beautiful dreamer” refers directly to my experience of photocopying. While I cannot remember most of the things I was asked to copy, I did have some good ideas for art projects and do some nice daydreaming standing there.

kork is 864 square inches of project space located above the photocopier in the office of Bailey Browne CPA and Associates, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

On a bimonthly basis a new artist will be pushing up against the confines of this bulletin board, examining among other things, the nature of work, the role of art in a non art context, issues of memory and attention, communication, utility as decor, the decor of utility, the utility of futility and God knows what else.

Deborah Bailey Browne, principal of the firm, has been supportive and welcoming to a series in exhibits and art based interventions I've organized within the office over the span of several years, featuring the work of a variety of mostly local artists.
Born from this series of rotating installations, kork will exist separately as it's own self contained entity.

The office is located at 80 Washington St in Poughkeepsie, NY, Suite 202. You are welcome to visit the space, but you can just as easily trace the goings on here on this blog.
